The ‘New Jersey’ High Containment Steelgard

The new ‘Steelgard’ guardrail consists of a specially shaped steel sheet to resemble the profile of the concrete “New Jersey” safety barrier. Internal ribbing stitch welded horizontally and vertically reinforces the main profiled structure and provides it with added strength.

Extensive research and thorough testing has made it possible to develop the best shape and position for each of the elements that make up the barrier, offering maximum restraint and minimum deceleration of the errant vehicle.

The elements are made as standard 3m and 6m lengths and are connected together by way of hinges at the rear side and a simple bolt through the toe of the barrier. A steel tube fixed to mounting posts positioned along the top of the barrier is specifically designed to deflect towed trailers.

The Steelgard is fixed to the concrete structure by means of M20 resin anchors set at 1.5m centres. The bolts are calibrated to produce a resisting force great enough to activate a “heavy chain effect” allowing the barrier to sufficiently absorb the force of the impact whilst deflecting the vehicle.

By using this heavy chain concept denotes a design parameter whereby the barrier must deflect to absorb the energy of the vehicle. The bolting down arrangement, which occurs through the toe of the barrier, is designed to shear at the base (flush with the concrete) under heavy impact.

This shearing of the bolt simplifies maintaining the barrier after impact, thus allowing for a cost effective repair or replacement.

Special care has been taken to protect the Steelgard against corrosion.  In order to guarantee the maximum durability of the barrier and to ensure it keeps its attractive appearance, the barrier is hot dip galvanized to BS EN ISO 1461 and normally painted using a dry powder coating, factory applied finish.

The paints, specifically developed for application to galvanised surfaces and designed for harsh environmental areas are available in a wide range of colours and finishes. These durable paint systems are difficult to damage, but in the event damage does occur a simple and speedy remedial repair is obtainable for on site application.
